Paula
Radcliffe MBE

Paula Radcliffe is one of the greatest distance runners of her
generation. She has overcome injury, asthma and others’ doubts. In 2002,
determination and perseverance were rewarded with World Cross Country,
5,000m Commonwealth and 10,000m European titles – and the Marathon world
record.
In March 2002, she became the first
woman in a
decade to successfully defend her World
Cross
Country title, with a convincing
victory in the
8-kilometre event.
In April, Paula put in a spectacular
display to win
the Flora London Marathon on her debut
at the
distance, in a record time of
2hrs.18mins.56secs.
In July, Paula finally shed her
reputation as the
nearly-woman of world athletics, by
winning a
major track title in 5,000m, at the
Commonwealth
Games in Manchester. She had previously
endured a succession of near-misses in
world
and Olympic finals.
In August, Paula took 10,000m gold at
the
European Championships in Munich with a
devastating display of front-running.
She shattered
the field with her blistering pace,
finishing in
30mins 01.09secs to break Ingrid
Kristiansen's
16-year-old European record of
30:13.74.
In October, Paula capped a sensational year by
setting a new women's world best in
winning the
Chicago Marathon. She crossed the
finish line in
2hrs.17mins.18secs. - 89 seconds inside
the old
record of Kenyan Catherine Ndereba.
In December, Paula was voted BBC Sports
Personality of the Year.
Since
March 2004 Paula has suffered the depths of despair at the
Athens Olympics in August and bounced
back to win both the
New York and London Marathons by Spring
2005. Her autobiography
Paula: My Story So Far was published in November 2004.
