Dame Mary
Peters DBE

Mary Peters was born in
Liverpool and moved to Northern Ireland with her family when she was 11
years old. Through a strong work ethic she converted raw talent
as an athlete into an international career spanning nearly two decades.
She reached the pinnacle of sporting effort and achieved an Olympic Gold
Medal.
Mary claimed gold
in the pentathlon at the Munich
Olympics in 1972,
after two gruelling days of five
events. On Day 1 she set
personal bests in the hurdles,
shot and high jump to lead
the day by 301 points. On
day 2 Mary’s long jump was
average and the
competition all came down
to the last event the
200metres. This was to be
the German athlete Heide
Rosendhal's best
event, which she won. Mary came
4th in a personal best to
give her 4801 points to Heide's
4791, to win gold
and also shatter the Olympic and
world records in the
process. Mary’s gold medal was
the only gold medal for
Britain at the games.
Mary is a true ambassador for Sport. Since retiring from
track and field, she has continued to serve Northern Irish and British
athletics, as President of the British Athletics Federation (1996-98);
and as Patron of the Northern Ireland Amateur Athletic Federation.
Outside athletics, she has served various organisations engaged with
national and community sport; charitable and community causes; and
broadcasting and the press. She also remains an important ambassador for
Northern Ireland. Her dedication to improving the lives of others and
her inspirational qualities have won her a host of honours and awards.
