David Hemery
CBE

David Hemery is a coach, teacher, writer and performance
consultant. He is also on the Executive of the British Olympic
Association.
Every so often in elite sport, a single performance
dramatically raises the bar; records are not broken, they
are smashed. At the 1968 Olympic games in Mexico
City, David won Gold in the 400m hurdles. The fact that
his time of 48.12secs would almost certainly guarantee a
place in an Olympic final now, gives some indication of
the significance of his performance.
In 1972, an Olympic bronze in the 400m hurdles and a
silver in the 4x400m relay, called time on a distinguished
career on the track, but he continued in athletics, both in
the UK and the USA as a coach and consultant.
In 1998, when Athletics turned fully professional, David
was elected
as the first president of UK Athletics, a post he
held until 2002.
David has also written several books on performance, including
Sporting Excellence. He passionately believes that every child
and young person has unique qualities to offer and that within
each there is a spark of greatness; and in July 2005 his book
How to Help Children Find the Champion Within Themselves
will be published.
