Joanna Lumley OBE

Joanna Lumley is one of Britain’s best-loved actresses and is now
regarded as something of a national treasure. She was born in Kashmir
and came to England as a young girl to complete her schooling; then
spent three years as a top model in the Swinging Sixties.
Her early films included Some Girls Do, as a James
Bond girl in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, two Pink Panther
films and Shirley Valentine. More recent films include James
and The Giant Peach, Innocent Lies, Sweeney Todd,
Mad Cows, Maybe Baby and The Cat’s Meow.
Joanna’s theatre work is equally extensive. She has
appeared in a range of contemporary and classical plays, including
The Letter, Private Lives, Noel and Gertie, Hedda
Gabler and Blythe Spirit.
Yet it is her television roles for which Joanna will
probably be remembered. Her early TV work includes Steptoe and Son,
The Persuaders, General Hospital and Coronation Street.
She played Purdey in The New Avengers and a sci-fi heroine in
Sapphire and Steel – both still being constantly shown worldwide.
Her experience of living alone on a desert island was
filmed for
a
BBC special Girl Friday. Other recent television includes
Class Act, Coming Home and Nancherrow.
Joanna's portrayal of the outrageous bee-hived,
hedonistic
ageing model, Patsy in Absolutely Fabulous is
acknowledged
as
one of the great TV characterisations.
Joanna is a tireless campaigner for animal rights and
numerous other charities. She has also written several books, including
an autobiography Stare Back and Smile. The photograph at the top
of this page is from the cover of her latest book
No Room for Secrets, published in October 2004.
