Tim
Waterstone

Tim Waterstone, one of the UK's most astute and determined
businessmen, founded Waterstone's bookshops in 1982 with a £6,000
redundancy payout from W H Smith. He went on to raise £100,000 venture
capital and set up the first shop in London's Old Brompton Road.
From his experience as W H Smith's American manager, Tim
brought the late-night bookstore concept to the UK. He established
Waterstone's reputation as the best literary bookshop in the world and
changed the face of British book retailing. Nine years later he sold the
company to his previous employers for £47m, only to buy it back again
together with EMI and Advent International in 1998, creating HMV Media
Group, of which he became founder Chairman.
Tim has since stepped down as Chairman and is now concentrating on his
latest venture, Daisy & Tom - a chain of children's department
stores offering everything for children up to the age of eight.
Tim is also a novelist with three books published to
date, as well as numerous published and broadcast articles in general,
literary and business media. His business story is a remarkable one and
his success speaks for itself.
