Mayank Patel is chairman and CEO of Currencies Direct Limited.

Mayank began his career as a futures and options broker in the City. After six years he began to get itchy feet and in 1996 decided to team up with a former colleague. Investing £4,250 each, they started trading from a tiny office in Paddington Street.

From these humble beginnings, the company has grown into a global organisation with a multimillion pound turnover. Currencies Direct has saved its customers thousands by giving them a cost-effective alternative to the high street bank for their currency transfers. Since its inception, it has capitalised on the growing British desire to own a place in the sun and has subsequently seen sales figures leap from £176 million in 2001 to £700.5 million in 2005. Today Currencies Direct has seven offices across four continents and in December 2005 was listed in The Sunday Times Virgin Atlantic Fast Track 100.
 

In recognition of his achievements, Mayank was named BT Entrepreneur of the Year 2002 and awarded Entrepreneur of the Year 2004 at the London Business Awards. In 2004 he was also awarded an NRI Excellence Award in India by Mr IK Gujral, former Prime Minister of India. In 2006, leading business publication Management Today listed Mayank as one of Britain’s Top 100 Entrepreneurs.

Mayank's father played a big role in shaping his aspirations. Says Mayank: “My dad said that the most important thing is to believe in yourself. The word defeat has never existed in my vocabulary. I honestly believe that you can achieve whatever you want as long as you believe in it 100%.”
