Mandy Haberman

Mandy Haberman is a highly regarded entrepreneur, world famous award-winning inventor; and leading international 'intellectual property rights' campaigner.

In 1980 Mandy's youngest child Emily was born with Stickler's Syndrome, which caused horrendous problems with feeding, resulting in her being tube fed for 4 months. Out of necessity, Mandy says she had to improvise a way to feed her orally. That improvisation was the seed for her first invention, specifically designed to help with a wide range of feeding problems. The Haberman Feeder® took five years to develop and was launched in 1987. It is now used in hospitals throughout the world.

In 1990 while visiting the home of another parent, Mandy observed a toddler spilling juice on the carpet. This sparked her imagination once more and her second invention, the Anywayup® Cup, a leak-proof trainer cup that seals between sips, was conceived. After years of development it went on sale in 1996 and was an instant success, with half a million sales in its first year.

Eighteen months later, a UK company Jackel International brought out a similar product under the Tommy Tippee brand, even though Mandy had taken out a patent in 1992. The only way to protect the invention was to take legal action. Mandy won her legal battle. Jackel International made a payment in respect of damages and costs and were ordered to stop selling their product.

Text Box: The Anywayup® Cup has revolutionised the nursery market. Non-spill cups are now the standard worldwide. Between licensees in America and the UK and a network of distributors employing a combined workforce of several hundred people globally, annual sales are now 10 million cups.

Mandy was British Female Inventor of the Year 2000 and won the

Design Effectiveness Awards 2000. Having successfully enforced

her intellectual property rights through the courts, she has become

an avid campaigner for improvements in the patent system.
