Sir James Dyson
CBE

James Dyson was voted the UK's "most admired entrepreneurial
business leader" in 2003. His brilliant design skills and refusal to
give up, have made his company a massive success and a "Dyson"
one of the most recognised brands.
It took 5,127 prototypes and over 14 years to get his first "bagless"
vacuum cleaner into a shop. Yet the Dual Cyclone™ was nearly never made
due to patent and legal costs. Unlike a songwriter who owns the song he
writes, an inventor has to pay substantial fees to renew his patents
each year. During the development years when James had no income, this
nearly bankrupted him. He risked everything, and fortunately the risk
paid off. Then in 1999, Hoover tried to imitate a Dyson and James was
forced back to court to protect his invention. After 18 months Dyson
finally won a victory for patent infringement.
By 2004 James Dyson's inventions were stocked in 22
countries - and nine museums worldwide - and global sales were more than
£3bn.
James was knighted in the New Year’s Honours List 2007,
for services to business.
